I haven't done a cake smash one, but have done several other "professional" type shoots for my kids. I am in no way good at photography, but everyone said they turned out great. Tips would be to use a background: a sheet or curtain, etc so the background is a solid colour, instead of say a wall and tiles, or find a nice spot outside. Experiment with lighting before you set up your child and the cake, wouldn't want them all to be too dark or glarey. Also, take about a million photos. Try different angles, camera settings if you have them, go wild and take as many photos as possible, as that way if only say 1/3 turns out "perfect" if you take 30 photos, that's 10 good ones - you take 90 photos, that's 30 good ones. Have fun though, and don't stress too much about it. If you're relaxed it will go better... and you could always redo it if it doesn't work out right away.

    Its a photo shoot
Im making a giant cupcake for DD
I will set it up like a photo booth (sort of) and will let her smash the cake! play with it and generally just get messy while taking photos so they kind of tell the story of her first ever birthday cake!

    Beginning middle and end results.
I googled cake smash and there are some really lovely ones.
    I couldn't post a link

Not everyones cup of tea but I think its a great sentimental keepsake!

Holy effing eff! $650? How do they get away with that?
If you're not 100% on doing it yourself, is there a friend or family member you could ask to help? In this age of technology, there are so many people who seem to take great photos with no experience or training, and some may have a better camera if yours is not-so-flash.
I love the idea of them - do you plan on posting a photo for us to see when you're done?

Try do it early morning or late arvo, the sun will create way too much harsh shadowson the little ones face.

    Dont use the flash

Practice taking pics of Your bub in the same setting (minus the cake) prior to work on your angles and to figure out the best lighting.

    Goodluck
