I have huge problems with my five year old autistic boy toileting .

My little boy of five with autism , is now starting to realise hes useing his bowl and bladder . However he refuses to go to the toilet other then once a day before the shower to urinate . He s also putting his bowel movements around the house . Im totally at my wits end with this behavouir . I have just recently descovered some of his poo in my washing machine . A little bit has gotten stuck in the machine and wondering what to do to get it out ???? I wondering if any other mother,s go through this problem with tolileting with their kids with autism or other special needs ? Would love to hear from you .

My friends step son is autistic and they have problems with poos too. Sorry I've not got any advice but just wanted to say you're not alone with this problem

I'm not the mother of any autistic children but I do have 2 brothers and several cousins who are autistic.

My youngest cousin was doing the same things you've described.
Relieving himself behind his bedroom door...

No idea if this is the problem but it is very common for people on the spectrum to have problems with pooing in a toilet. With the adults I've worked with, it was often a problem with the 'plop' sounds and the splash... sorry for TMI. We were able to work this out through trial and error by lining the toilet bowl with paper. Worked a treat for several of our clients though not very economical or environmentally friendly.
I know a few others who have problems with having to flush away something that has come from their body. For some reason fluid (i.e. urine) doesn't seem to be an issue but poo being flushed really freaks them out.

We put a little paper liner bowl into the toilet when dd goes so that she does not freak out and it stop the sound, this has made it more comfortable for her to go.You can get them from terry white chemists.They can then just be flushed down the loo like toilet paper

my ds#1 is scared of the toilet, he goes now. but he is scared of it. the room itself is very bright, and cold, and the sound of the toilet flushing scares him big time (asd, and sensory processing disorder) so.. we keep the light off but the hall light on so there is some light, i stand just outside of the toilet, and he doesnt flush. that's pretty much what helped with him

ds#2 (also dx with asd, spd) is 3 in a few weeks, and just screams no when we offer it to him, so i dont know whats going to happen there.


do you see an occupational therapist? do they have any suggestions? there are some wonderful books out there, if you contact your autism advisor they should have some information on that as well, we just recieved some stuff from them regarding toileting.
