You know, my DH shows his appreciation for what I do all the time. Mother's Day and Father's Day are the days that we guarantee ourselves a family day where one of us gets a bit pampered and some extra love with some small gifts of appreciation.
I am not materialistic (my fave present this year was $6.05 that my 6 year old wrapped up for me out of her piggy bank, she's saving hard for a lalaloopsy doll so I realise how much this means to her to give me some of her money so I can spend it on something myself) and I don't live with a ********* of a DH who leaves it all up to me every other day of the year and then goes for 'husband of the year' award on Mother's Day or whatever other ridiculous notion that has been put forward in this thread.
Like OJ said, it's about choosing what to celebrate in your family...for us we choose to celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day and there is nothing wrong/materialistic or troubling about it.
