Default *** Spin off *** when should a child no longer be BF

Spin off from the Time mag thread.

So, by what age do you personally think a child should no longer be breastfed.

I always said I would never breastfeed once they had teeth but then once I started I was just going to keep going and going, unfortunately I couldn't so I never had to really think about weaning. But with all this latest discussion, it got me thinking, how old is too old???

I think 12 months is long enough, 18 months absolute max so basically once bub is walking and eating plenty of solids they don't need to be breast fed. Just my personal opinion.
Blessed with 2, hoping for 3. Back on the IVF train.
    April 2007 - 11 eggs collected, 4 emby's, Fresh transfer BFN
    August 2007 - FET BFP.
    April 2010 - 2 remaining embies didn't thaw,
    July 2010 - 7 eggs collected, 2 emby's. Fresh transfer BFP

Sept 2012 - remaining emby didn't survive the thaw
Lucky last cycle early April before we get off this train once & for all

I don't believe there can be a "cut off" age, because people change, circumstances change etc... If you'd asked me seven years ago, I would've said 6-12 months.

Now, I think it's about a mum and her child and what *they* need. I feel so grateful to have been around women and kids who have normally and naturally breastfed to 2, 3, 4, 6 yrs old - it helped to challenge me, it confronted me and what I saw as "normal".

So a big shout out to the mums here that edumacated me

I BF my son until he was 19 months old, and then he pretty much woke up one day and didn't ask for it anymore.
I'm glad, because around that time, I was really wanting to wean him, because I was 7 months pregnant and could not physically stand it anymore. I had stopped producing milk, and (everyone tells me it is a normal, hormonal reaction) could not bear the feeling of having him on my b00b. It was becoming something I really hated doing, and I didn't want it to damage our relationship. I don't know if he picked up on that, but for whatever reason, he decided to stop.

If I'd not fallen pregnant, assuming that it wouldn't have become uncomfortable for me and he had wanted to continue, I would still be doing it now, and I can't wait to start a new breastfeeding relationship with DS2.

I believe the right time to stop is when the mother and child decide it's time

18 months? I agree with pp: if a kid is walking and taking and getting most of their nutrients from solids there's not much point in bf'Ing. However if someone wants to do it longer then good luck to them.

i think up until the suck/breathe ability to stay at the breast is gone its normal to continue. (happens anywhere for 2-7).

i think weaning prior to 2 is weird so whenever the kid is ready (over 2 if its under 2 its just a strike. - and yes, i'm being mostly-tongue in cheek)
