    Default Carrot ... Raw sticks

    Hi,

What age do you allow your child to eat raw carrot sticks?? I still haven't given my 2.5 year old raw carrot. He isn't a big fan of cooked carrot, regardless.
Starting to think I'm a bit protective. I always seem to have some foods he can't have, that my sister thinks is appropriate. She doesn't have kids, and I have had to mention the whole nut thing to her.
My dh thinks I may be a little over reactive about the carrot stick!

I used a peeled raw carrot as an alternative to rusks for a young bub (4mo, 6mo, etc).

In my opinion, a whole carrot was too big to swallow, so choking wasn't a problem. I did not give them carrot sticks, because narrow sticks can easily break and thus small pieces might cause choking.

When the baby started biting chunks off to eat, that is the point that I started cutting into sticks for her.

DS was about 12 months old when I started to give him raw carrot sticks, cut into thin chip shaped lengths so easy to bite , same age with whole apples

My kids definitely had carrot sticks by 2 and a half.

I can't remember what age they would have started... Maybe 12 months??

Ds has been having carrot sticks since 19 months, he's a hlgood chewer though, I wouldn't dream of giving his same age cousin raw carrot as he is a swallower.

Now at 23 months he prefers whole peeled carrot and whole peeled apple (no apple skim, a kid I know was 3 or so and had s bad experiance with apple skin)

    Thanks for that info.

I have been flying blind and using the info I get from websites and child and youth health nurses as I don't have family with kids my DS's age and only a few friend's with kids the same age.

Got confused as the cyh website says not to give until they are 4 or 5 years of age due to choking risk. Of course, I kept reading, and they also advised no sultanas or apple either. Very confusing. Time to chop up some carrot.

I only give steamed sticks to toddlers. If they are having it it raw it's grated so nnot a choking risk.
