    Default DS2 diabetes diagnosis

I'm after any info, advice, help - anything. Bombard me!

My beautiful baby boy was admitted to the paediatric ICU yesterday with severe diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) . He's still very unwell, but slowly improving and has been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

I have a bit of knowledge about diabetes because of someone who was once close to me, but know nothing about very young children with it. I have tried researching, but it always seems to be older kids (although my research hasn't been thorough...still in hospy so only have my phone).

Do any hubbers have young children with diabetes? He will have insulin injections and finger pricks every day for the rest of his life now and I would love some advice on doing this with a one-year-old. We start our education classes on Monday, but some personal experiences would be great

I'm not sure about babies but my dp has type 1 diabetes, he was offered an insulin pump instead of the injections, my understanding is that it slowly releases insulin and you only take it off to shower or swim etc, he chose the injections.
Hope your boy is feeling better soon

    how old is your son?
My cousin has 2 out of 3 of her kids with type 1 (youngest was diagnosed at just 2 years old) and I know she is quite active within a support group/forum of other parents in the same situation. If you are interested pm me and I will see if I can get you in touch with her..

ETA - Both of my cousins kids have the insulin pumps too and I know that she raves about these over injections.

    Oh your poor bubba boy

No personal experience, but my cousin was diagnosed with type 1 when he was quite young, I think around 3 years old (he is now 25). He coped remarkably well an has an insulin pump now as well.

I hope someone is able to give you some advice from first hand experience x

Oh Witwicky, I couldn't read and not reply.

What a stressful past couple of days you and your little boy have had. I don't have any personal experience with diabetes in babies, only the elderly.
I wish you well and hope your little boy recovers quickly from this recent blow

I was going to suggest the pump as I know a boy with one, he is 11 though and was diagnosed when about 7 or 8 I think so not sure of the age you have to be.

No real advice, just wanted to send some virtual hugs x
