As a son whose dad didn't want and had nothing to do with me, this issue is very close to home. That one act (he was 28 at the time) shaped my whole life. I have had abandonment issues for as long as I can remember. Mum did her best but there are just some things that can't be undone.

I spent most of my life hating him. And to this day, I vow and continue to vow that I will never be like him. At 28 he was old enough to know better. There was no excuse good enough that anyone could provide and, when I tracked him down a few years ago, there was no good excuse.

And when I gave him the option to get to know me and my girls, he was all "oh, that's wonderful of you blah blah blah." But then I didn't hear from him again. Rang - no answer. Facebook messages - the lot. No reply.

The man was and is an utter ***. And thank god genetics don't make all your personality because thankfully I'm nothing like him. Because the thing I'm the proudest of is my sense of responsibility. Something he knows nothing about. As far as I am concerned, he can rot in hell. But then again, knowing the type of man he is, I'm glad he didn't get the opportunity to influence me - I'm better off without him.

    Wan ker.
