What does your current prep child know?

My DD is in prep in south australia, is doing basic addition, I think that they are focusing more on reading and writing, she knows the first 100 sight words and is at level 6 readers, this is a little ahead of her class average.

She's already into Term 2 of Prep, but before she left me all alone *sob* I made sure she could read, write and spell her first and last name, count to 100, count by 10's and 5's up to 100, could tie her own shoelaces, knew basic biology like where do eggs come from, how are babies formed in the womb, how to do basic gardening {which isn't 'school' skills anyway, more life skills}, knew the planets in order, could read and write about 100 words, and could obey layered directions.

Thanks, yep I am interested in what they are up to in term 2 which is what we are doing at home She needs to be able to slot into grade one at school next year. She also has the advantage of having 2 older siblings (and 2 younger ones.)

She can count in 2's and 5's. Haven't done planets with her yet in great detail but probably will She is great with addition and subtraction, gets it really easily. She can read basic words and could write a sentence like "I am a cat" or "I am *name*" etc. She knows ordinal numbers, no problem with greater than and less than and positions, knows alot of rhyming words and opposites, all her shapes including 3D. She does lovely detailed drawings and colours in well when she tries...No problems following directions or getting dressed, making bed, cleaning up, etc.

I think she will be ok, just need to work on those last few letters she has trouble with. Thanks for the WB Biscotti.

DD is in prep and honestly all the kids are at different levels. Some are still learning basic letters and sounds and golden words (a, an, at, to etc) and some are much more advanced.

DD can read about 50 words and is learning sounds like "igh" "ai" "sh" and "ch". She knows how to sound words out (and knows that sometimes words sound different to how they look).

She can count by 2s and 10s and can do basic addition and subtraction (but I taught her that before school, not sure if they have done it in prep).

My son is in Prep and is currently able to read some sight words, such as this is it said and the etc etc. He is doing some basic readers, using the pictures and sounding out. He knows all of the Jolly Phonics. He can tell the time to O'Clock and half past. He can count in 2's and 5's and 10's, and knows his doubles up to 10 + 10 is 20 and does addition and subtraction, the simpler number sentences he does mentally. He has an older sister and has learnt a lot of the math from sitting with us while doing her Year 2 homework.

Yeah my preppie is learning her golden and red words.... She probably really knows about 10

There's such variation.... I'm sure your DD will do just fine in Grade 1!

My DS1 (in Term 2 Kindy in NSW- 5 years old) is on Level 3 readers, writes simple stories, does basic additions and substractions. Each night, we have a new reader book, go through a list of sight words and once a week he has to write a story and draw a picture to match to story. He also does Reading Eggs and Mathletics (log on codes provided by the school- he does this at school and we are encouraged to do it at home too).
