Dream Baby Retractable Gate 0.3 cm clearance required?

Greetings everyone,

Had a question on the Dream Baby Retractable Gate, or any child safety gate for that matter, when it comes to the clearance underneath the gate.

I am looking to install a Dream Baby Retractable Gate at the base of our staircase, but the contours of the wall and balustrades make it difficult without lots of extensions (which I'm trying to avoid).

The simplest configuration has the bottom of the gate about 5 cm above the first step on the staircase. Dream Baby state that the clearance from the floor to the bottom of the gate must be 0.3 cm or less.

I wonder if having a retractable gate 5 cm off the floor is really an issue? I can't see how a bub could squeeze through such an opening. He might push items through the gap but we'll spot those. It's the saftey aspect I'm worried about and only care to stop his travels up the stairs. It would be nice to simply try the idea, but if it fails then I'll have the unsightly drill holes to plug on an otherwise undamaged staircase.

Has anyone had a similar experience of installing a gate with a gap underneath, and what were the consequences?
