Single mums doing diploma of enrolled nursing

Did you have to use before/after school care for your kids? I have one dd and wondering If I'll need to use daycare. I know I'd get more money back because I'm studying. How much did it cost once you got both rebates. But I'd prefer to not use daycare everyday. My parents have offered to help a couple of days during the week. What were the hours usually like? I'll be doing it at Tafe.

Hi Jensha congrats on deciding to become an enrolled nurse!

I am an EN and did Cert IV in Nursing four years ago. Although I didn't have a little one at the time, I found it to be quite a full on course.

No doubt your course will differ as it is now offered as a diploma over 18 months, but when I studied it was a 12 month course and I had to be on campus monday to friday 0900-1600 the first semester and monday to thursday 0900-1600 in the second semester.

Maybe contact the tafe you will be studying at and find out contact hours or see if they offer part-time if that suits you better?

You will need to take into account all the homework (assignments, test revision, etc) you need to do at home too, as well as clinical placements. During my course I had four placements which went for two weeks per placement. Some placements were all AM shifts (0700-1500), others were a mixture of AM and PM shifts (1500-2300). For the placements with mixed shifts, we didn't find out until the first day of placement what shifts we were given which can be tricky with childcare arrangements but they definately gave preference to those with young children.

When i was studying i had to use before and after school care. BSC cost about $3 and ASC i was paying $6 something.

You can also apply for JET and pay 10cents an hour.

Thanks for replys. What daycare did you use Mystics#1fan? I'll be using abc I hope they have similar prices. What's JET?

I'm doing en dip as a pathway to get into RN Bach and midwifery post grad :-)

No worries

I'm studying Bachelor of Midwifery at the moment and loving it! Being an EN first is a real advantage I think.. You'll get credits off your degree which will save a lot of money in course fees too

JET is jobs, education and training. You only pay 10cents and hour.

I dont use daycare, i use before and after school care.

Definitely look into Jet if you do commence studying. I get it for both of my kids. One is in daycare and one is in after school care. DS2 i pay $4 a week for 4 days of daycare and DS1 i pay 90c a week for 3 days of after school care. I still get the 50% rebate each quarter as well.
