I really dont understand why everyone is making a big deal of it on the news etc. Isn't it just the ETR brought forward a month?

Do we still claim the ETR in July this year or not? Heres a quote i found in a news article:

The opposition says the decision to dump the education tax refund from 2013 and replace it with the new bonus shows Labor has panicked over the impact the carbon tax will have on households from July 1.

It said its being dumped in 2013, so do we still claim in july for 2011/2012. If not, i dont see how its a bonus if it was due to parents anyway?!

I for one am glad, as I forgot to lodge last year, and keeping receipts is a PITA. Much prefer them to just add a payment. If they think we are entitled to it, I'd rather they just give it, rather than put the onus on us to keep receipts and fill out forms. Getting a lump sum at the beginning of the year so I can buy new shoes and a uniform is much easier than trying to budget to save for those items - and those items are always needed when cash is low!

I'm so over the Labour govt. Sounds to me like they're taking it away in one hand and giving it back as a 'bonus' to get everyone all excited so they get votes. I hate to imagine what all the administration costs are for this kind of thing.

It's just replacing one vote grabbing scheme for another really.
I love that Labor think the public are so stupid as to fall for such an obvious slight of hand trick.
