In theory though, I agree with him. I think celibacy is an outdated theory and should be abolished.

Perhaps if celibacy was abolished, the molestation and such which seems to be rampant throughout various religions would no longer be such a problem.
I'm sorry, but I can't agree that the sexual abuse that is perpetrated by members of the church occurs because they aren't able to vent their sexual frustration in any other way. The church possibly has a disproportionate number of child molesters, and perhaps the instances of sexual abuse is greater because of increase opportunity because of the trust that people place in their priest, allowing them to have unsupervised interaction with children but to imply that it occurs because they aren't allowed to have sex over simplifies the issue, and also potentially tars priests who don't do the wrong thing with the same brush.

I actually think the priesthood attracts some people with sexual issues as a 'safe place' in the presence of God. Which is another contributor to the bad rep.

The Mormon prophet is always a married man Booby. I don't envy that wife role.

You are absolutely right. But perhaps, just perhaps, it might reduce the prevalence of such molestation.

Only perhaps. You understand I'm not saying this is an absolute cure to the problem?

Yes ITA. But the lack of transparency in the church makes it worse.

Same can be said for counsellors, Big Brother/Sister programs, FDC workers, all sorts of roles. Peadophiles seek out such roles, NOT people in such roles are more inclined. If the reins were tightened, they would find another way. The peadophiles I know are sports coaches, train drivers, pub owners and cops

I'm sure you'd work it out. Like I saw an interview with Antony Robbins (not saying Antony Robbins is a religion in himself... But.... Kinda...) he was saying he learnt pretty quick not to 'antony Robbins' his wife.

Yep I agree, but those professions and the superiors usually don't cover up the crime and buy people's silence. Furthermore, why does the catholic church have much higher rates than say anglican or baptist? Again, you are not the church so my anger on this topic isn't directed at you. But the rates vs other christian churches are higher.

I also doubt that a peadophile who is married would be sated of his/her compulsion to molest children because they have access to sex with their wife/husband/partner. It may be the case that if a person who is so inclined has children of their own, they may molest their own children. I'm guessing we would not hear as much of those cases.

I also agree with Blissed Out about the catholic church appealing to people who are aware that they may have various sexual issues or inappropriate thoughts, seeking some kind of healing or shelter.

As Delirium said, the lack of transparency and the tendency for the church to close ranks around an offender is completely inappropriate, but also predictable that a big business would not want to concede fault lest it open them up to legal action.

Govt agencies DO cover it up. Please, it is dangerous to think that transparency or religin is to blame for peadophilia.
