Question 5 weeks 6 day scan - only gestational sac, no yolk sac or fetal pole is this normal?

    Hi there,

I am hoping some of you might be able to help with a bit of advice. Yesterday I had an Ultrasound at 5 weeks 6 days. The Tech could only see a gestational sac of 5mm which they suggested would be 4.5 weeks along. This concerned me as I take my BBT and I know exactly when I ovulated, which was day 17 or 18. .
I have heard conflicting information that they should be able to see a at least the yolk sac at 5 weeks 6 days. I am worried as I have read many stories of women who have blighted ovums.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated. )

    Was it an internal ultrasound?

Yes it is normal. I had a dating scan for my DD (now nearly 2 ) at 5 weeks. They saw just the sack, no poles or anything, and I was worried as you are about blighted ovum. I went back about 11 days later and had another scan (requested internal) and saw a heartbeat.

Blighted ovums look different to a gestational sack, a blighted ovum has soft or wavy edges, where a gestational sac is smooth and usually round (mine was all a squished oval because my bladder was so full lol!).

Try not to let worry stop you from enjoying this special time (and if you have another baby wait longer for the first scan if you can!).

Thank you so much for your advice, its makes me feel so much better. Sometimes I think my mind wonders off to think the worst. Hopefully the next 2 weeks will go by quickly to put my mind at ease.

Try not to worry too much. My last pregnancy I had an early scan at 5 weeks to rule out ectopic, and the specialist could only see a sac... I was stressed, started googling, then stressing about blighted ovums etc.. But all for nothing. Another scan at almost 6 weeks showed a fetal pole too..

And don't forget, you may know exactly when u ovulated, but you don't know when you actually conceived or how long it took for the embryo to attach - might have just taken the maximum amount of time in your case! I did IVF with a 5 day blastocyst and my dates were half a week off!

Try not to stress Good luck!
