I'm from Adelaide and I've never heard of them! I always assumed potato cakes at the fish & chip shops were more like hash browns, but I've never seen them on a menu.

I think Adelaide has the right idea. That seems like the most correct term for what it actually is. It's not a scallop or a cake.

to me potato scallops is a dish with sliced potato, cheese/cream sauce, maybe bacon bits and onions, baked in the oven. Yum.
So, to those who called potato cakes (the kind you get in the fish n chip shop) "scallops", what do you call the baked dish that I just described??
    Potato bake 100%. NSW

That's Scalloped Potatoes or Potato bake.

And a Seafood Scallop is exactly that a Seafood Scallop.

Neither. I've never even heard of it?
Potato cakes to me are grated potato with other ingredients shallow fried like a patty.

I'm in Vic. It's potato cakes. We also lived in NSW for many years when I was a kid & it was potato scallops. I agree that Adelaide has the right idea in calling them potato fritters. We call deep fried bananas and pineapple rings fritters, why not potato?

The other dish is called scalloped potatoes or potato bake.

NSW potato scollops or just scollops. Although I always clarify 'potato' scollops.

I'm from Qld and it's potato scallop to me. My DH is Victorian though and calls them potato cakes.

My family has this kick *** potato cake recipe. My nana started it I believe and showed my dad. Put potato, onion in the food processor and pulverize it. Then mix in egg, breadcrumbs and I can't think what else. Fry them up and douse in vinegar. Sooooo yummy! Even cold the next day on a sandwich they are great.

    Potato Scallop!

Best served on a fresh white bread roll with copious amounts of tomato sauce. A 'scallop burger'. Oh droooool!
