I think it's safer to say "potato cakes," really... since a crumbed sea scallop is also likely to be on their menu, but is totally different to what you actually want. If they miss potato and only hear scallop... you'll be unimpressed when it arrives (though personally, I love sea scallops! YUM!).

Have just moved from ACT to VIC and have been trying to get used to the term potato cakes as I'm used to saying potato scallops. Although some takeaways here have battered scallops ( as in seafood ones) so i have had to correct myself once already.

I have never heard of such a thing? I know potatoes, I know scallops, I know cakes but I've never heard those words used together!

New South Welsh by birth, I grew up knowing them as scallops. Now I've lived in Victoria for twenty years, and they are potato cakes.

    Potato cakes. I'm in Vic..
to me potato scallops is a dish with sliced potato, cheese/cream sauce, maybe bacon bits and onions, baked in the oven. Yum.
So, to those who called potato cakes (the kind you get in the fish n chip shop) "scallops", what do you call the baked dish that I just described??

So what do you ask for in NSW if you actually want a real shellfish scallop?
