Default Rant: stay away when you're sick, please!

OK, here's my rant for today...

Why is it so hard for sick people to stay away from pregnant women?! I swear, no one thinks about the fact that we preggy ladies are more susceptible to picking up bugs and germs than other people!

I know we can't expect to be wrapped in cotton wool - and it is hard when you've already got a germy toddler to look after - but with this pregnancy it seems like no one thinks twice about hanging around when they've got a cold or gastro or whatever, or bringing their kids over when they're hacking and coughing and sneezing (people were a bit more sensitive the first time around, but maybe that was just chance). It's driving me nuts! And of course, after spending part of yesterday with people in this category I've now come down with a sore throat...

I wouldn't have minded so much except that I'm so close to giving birth and I really don't want to go into labour with a cold (I just started another thread on that topic). Also, I've been pretty healthy this whole pregnancy so the timing is really annoying...

I hear you and rant away....

I have a 22month old and a 17month old and currently 25 weeks pregnant and we went to the IL's for Easter Sunday and my SIL was there with her 17 month old whom was quiet sick.. We were not informed that she was sick in anyway until after myDS and DD had kissed, cuddled and played with her for over 1/2hour that she made the comment, 'Oh I hope we don't pass on any sickness to the kids'..

I was so mad as my 22month old does in fact pick up everything and last yr spent time in hospital... Well as it turned out he did in fact pick up her bug and he was pretty sick and then passed it onto DD whom then gave it to me....

Long story short, DH had to be called home twice form work to look after kids, I have NEVER felt so sick in my life and even ended up in hospital on monday night with BP 160/100... I am now home but on lots of rest, her reply.... oh Take Care!! My Meds have kicked in so I am feeling better but if she had informed me then I would not have gone and would not need antibotics while pregnant... arghhh

I know it is that time of yr and even when being careful you can still pick things up but far out atleast let people make the choice if they want to hang out with sick people...

SOrry to take over your vent but as you tell I am still so mad myself...

I hope that you are feeling better and that it does not develop into anything else..

OP if anyone was coming to my house when I was preggers I straight out asked if they are or have been sick in the previous week.. I made no apologies for it! You are well entitled to insist on sick people staying away. I understand your frustration. I caught gastro when 24 weeks pregnant my then 7 month old caught if and do did DH, I ended up in hospital and my friend messages me and said "o its going around, I had it a few days ago.." I had been to visit her and had asked had the kids been sick and she said no but friggen failed to mention she had! I swear I was so angry !

Mrs Pees.. You have a 22mth old and 17 month old?? You are brave!!! How did that happen??? Good luck with your pregnancy! X

I really hear you on this one!!

My nearly 4yo DS is immunosuppressed, so if (it's not really a matter of if, more when) he gets sick then I get sick. Everyone we know has been warned that DS can go rapidly downhill from just the sniffles or the runs but there's no respect!!!

31 weeks pregnant now and I've had gastro 4 times and I'm on my second flu, all because people haven't the decency to think twice before just 'dropping in to say hi'. The first gastro bug ended up with me in the middle of a threatened miscarriage - not impressed at all. Luckily it went alright and we're still baking

I just don't answer the door anymore. I'm not risking it this winter, too much to lose!

I was thinking the same thing!

ps totally agree with the OP! I had to actually let my newly found maternal instincts kick in when DS was 3 days old in hospital and a certain visitor was coughing and spluttering everywhere!!! Grrrrrr

I work in customer service, which sucks while pregnant
This last week I've had two customers cough all over their money and purchases (as in cover their mouths with the hands that held the stuff) and then hand them directly to me. I managed to just grab a corner and went and washed my hands after they left, but still it is so gross. Still not as bad as people pulling their money (coins and all) out of their underwear and handing that to you
