I've caught a taxi with a toddler carseat once from an airport but the other times they haven't had one and say it is ok to travel without one. The last time when I phoned to order one with toddler seat the operator was a little rude in telling me they don't have them, but I can supply one if I wanted!

I'm guessing it must be legal to travel in taxi without one.

In Australia at least it's considered public transport so you don't need a car seat. I think they have to be on your lap with a seat belt over them though and at a certain point they have to sit beside you in the seat with a separate seatbelt on them.

ETA - looks like in most states a taxi driver isn't responsible for restraining a child under the age of seven, however of there is a seat in the car it must be used. All taxis must have anchor points if you want to take your own however and you can request it on booking I think.

In QLD you are allowed to travel without a kid in a car seat if and only if there are sufficient adults to hold onto the kids. So I coudl travel in a taxi with DD on my lap but couldnt if I had another baby (twins). Not sure of the legality of having two or more small children without seats.

IMO if its a short trip - dont worry bout it too much.
