    Hi Mackay mummies!

We may be moving to Mackay, yay! Dh had a job interview there yesterday, and it went really well, but he hasn't heard for sure yet. Anyway, I've gotten way ahead of myself and have been researching Mackay like a crazy person. I have some questions, I'd love some answers...

So, black beach, seems really good value, brand new rentals for 400-500 per week. What's the catch? Is there any public transport into mackay? How far is it to mackay?

Also, central mackay, south mackay, north mackay, should I avoid anywhere? Any suburb recommendations?

Also, in the real estate .com adds, it looks like every house has security screens on every window, why? Is this due to a high crime rate? Are we going to get broken into?

If we have another baby (undecided) is there a birth centre or similar?

Background, we are a family of 4 so far, dd1 is 3, dd2 is 1. Dh's role would be dido, 2 on1 off, we share a car, so I will be carless two thirds of the time.

I'm pretty sure I have more questions, so I'll be back if I get a reply!

I used to live in blacks beach. The houses in blacks beach cove are the ones your likely looking at (if they have beach street names - Whitehaven, coogee, Miami etc). It's an ok estate, but packed full of rentals. All the houses are on top of each other. Not really my cup of tea, but it obviously works for some.

Buses to run out to blacks beach, but not regularly - 3 times a day, I think?! Check out mackay transit for time tables.

Blacks beach has a small set of shops and a pub, but no supermarket.

Rural View is the suburb in the northern beaches closest to the shops, I think they have buses more regularly too.

I'd avoid south mackay. But Ooralea is alright, they have new estates and a shopping centre.

North mackay is ok in places.

I think by 'security screens' they mean fly screens. I lived in blacks beach for 3 years with no issues.

There is a birth centre attached to mackay base

I have lived in east Mackay ever since I moved to Mackay and love it, it's so central and bigger blocks.

Blacks beach (and anywhere norhern beaches) is nice, it's not far away from the grocery stores in the northern beaches.

Cuttersfield estate is really nice but smallish blocks, they have a new grocery store right there also and not far from the city centre.

I wouldn't avoid ALL of south Mackay, just mainly the area around Mackay state high school.

Public transport isn't great in Mackay at all, hours between busses coming/going.

Thank you all for your replies!

Hours between buses doesn't sound great at all. I'll google the schedule...

We're considering living in a unit or small townhouse, trying to negotiate a 6 month lease at first so we can find our feet.

We've moved across the country before, but it was to a place where dh has family, that was much easier! I've never actually been to mackay, and we don't know anyone there, so all opinions are appreciated.

Thanks again. If you think if anything else I should know, feel free to share!
