Christianity doesn't teach us that you will go to hell if you sin. As the cardinal said, we will all face judgement on the last day and it's not for him (or his religion) to decide who goes to hell or heaven.
Also "Of course an atheist can go to heaven" were something close his words...
He had Dawkins for dinner tonight! Lolz

Yes it is most definitely emotional abuse! Its pretty sad if these are the lengths parents feel they need to go to, to encourage their child to be compliant.

Disgusting. Don't know why anybody would want to scare their children.

I guess it's quite a horrific thing for a child to hear, adults I guess forget what it's like to be a kid with kids percepetions, so the grandma who said she didnt believe in God, so was 'going to hell' was most likely being tongue in cheek, not wanting to scar anyone for life....

And as for telling their children Jesus was murdered, well, my kids were told all about that this Easter, I just wanted to be honest with them about what it was about, what people believed etc.

They weren't worried about it, thought it was pretty mean, but hey, they know people kill other people, people die from disease etc, people die of old age, I'm not going to wrap them in cotton (not saying you think that) I'm pretty blunt with my kids.

I definitely don't agree with people telling their kids they will go to hell as a form of control, but if the parents really and truly believe in hell, then perhaps they think they are protecting their children, telling them the things 'not to do' to stay out of hell. I can't imagine a christian parent would aactually WANT their kids to go to hell??

I didn't see the interview BTW... Dawkins is very arrogant, but also very intelligent. He's allright

I agree thy it can be used as a tool for emotional abuse. I'm not going to engage any further though as I have strong beliefs on religion. bye.

Basically it is threatening a child with a "punishment", if the punishment is "very scary" or terrifying for the child then i believe it is abuse - it is abusing your power as an adult & scaring a child psychologically which could have far reaching impacts.

I have told DD about hell. I have never used it as a form of punishment or discipline, jeeze, that is just wrong.

I have told her that bad people go to hell and good people go to heaven. She asked me if that meant that all kidnappers and robbers to go hell even if they have just stolen 'like a tv'',and I said 'unless they are truly sorry for what they have done yes, and God knows if you are truly sorry for something, not just pretending to be, so if these people that do really horrible things in the world are sorry, truly sorry in their hearts, and they do no more bad things like that ever again, then they might get to go to heaven, it's up to God'.
I wanted her to know that just because someone does one really bad thing in their life, it does not mean they are damned to hell forever.

As for people who do not believe in God, I have told her that it is up to God as to whether he allows them into heaven, if they have led very good lives and have been a kind person on earth, he might let them in once they meet him and decide they DO believe in him.

As you can see, I pick my own version of things to tell DD as she is only 7,and I think that is okay for us, as long as she gets the fundamentals, be kind to others etc, I think she'l be fine.

I don't know if it's child abuse but it is definitely an unnecessary tool some people use to manipulate children. I thought Dawkins was great and I don't think he got a fair run at all. It was near impossible to have a discussion with the bizarre tangents Pell was going on. The audience was off putting many times throughout last nights show too. Bit of a shame really.

Same, although we didnt use the word' murdered' we used 'killed'. She has known this from about 4 years old, she is very logical about these kind of things and never has nightmares or anything. She knows bad things happen in the world, she knows people die, people kill other people, there is no getting away from it, flick through the tv channels round 6 oclock and you get 'BREAKING NEWS, 6 PEOPLE SHOT DEAD BY '....before you have the chance to quickly flick over the channel!

great thread - I will have to think about it and will come back when I have time to write properly. This is something I think about often as my DH was raised in an extreme Pentacostal (sp) church/society where this thing is taught from birth pretty much. I don't know what I would call it but it doesn't sit well with me at all.
