    Default Spelling/grammar **spin off***

The spelling thread prompted this one. Australian vs American spelling is a killer in this day and age of autocorrect and spell check... And to be specific i would like to raise an age old argument between DH and I.
Australian spelling of jail is gaol.
Tell me I'm right so I can rub it in his face!!!

I believe that's more of an older spelling that's not really used anymore (except when talking about old prisons)... ?

I agree it should be spelt "gaol"! Sadly, though, I think this spelling has been largely lost and is hardly used any more.

But if we were being technical, this is the Australian spelling (though largely been phased out due to heavy American spelling influences?)???

There is a difference. Gaol is a noun only, and jail is a noun and a verb. It's correct to 'jail' (imprison) someone, and put them in a gaol.

I always just write 'prison' because both jail and gaol feel wrong (jail - too American, gaol - too old fashioned).

As for noun/verb I didn't realise that but it makes sense. Thanks for educating me
