Aother option would be (and this is going to sound soap operaish) But she culd have had a major accident, losing her lung and getting amnesia. Are you a rel from the first life or second. Did she get back in touch with first family? If one changes their name by deed poll they have to put a reason....another angle to look at.

Then change name and dob out of shame/guilt? Possible.

it is possible she could have witnessed a serious crime, so maybe try looking in the local newspapers of the time she disappeared to see if there was a major crime reported.

You could also try the state archives. I've only ever dealt with Queensland State archives but I think they are pretty similar in what they do. Send them an email with all the info you have and they might try and point you in the right direction.

Another option is the justice and police museum in Sydney. They may hold police and court records, but if she did go into witness protection then I think you might have to show proof of death, and proof of relationship to you to be able to access any information. I could be wrong so please don't take that as gospel

If I think of anything else, I'll post again. hope this helps and good luck!! I know how frustrating brick walls can get! I've come across a few in my research and one now about DF's Scottish great great grandfather really has me baffled!!

Thanks to all of you who replied

I probably should have put in a little more detail, so here it is.

Her husband and her were very in love - so unsure why she would have an affair but she was a ballroom dancer and he did not dance - so maybe it was the man who was her partner - however her husband did not know the man in the photograph.

Her 2 sisters lived close to her with children the same age and spent alot of time together. They were a very close knit family. She could have been pregnant when she left - came from her sister. Her sisters said that the man in the photo was a "bad man" then I asked and they said they did not know anymore about him or any names. I know she did not contact her sisters until 1981 and even then they never had anything to do with the new family. They stayed in contact with the old family. I am part of the new family.

So why would a city girl with everthing vanish and then show up in outback QLD and marry a station hand. It doesn't make sense.

I am sure at some stage she was in Melbourne given that she always talked about melbourne and the Trams - She loved it there.

Her birth and Marriage was registered.

    Nothing makes sense????

Have you tried the local family history society? Mackay family history society were very helpful to me when I was struggling to get through one of my brick walls. Or maybe ask a professional genealogist?

There is a similar story on my mums side. I think it was my great grandmother?? but she had several different names, different places of birth on different documents. She was a sinlge mother and back when she was alive it was obviously not socially acceptable at all. When she died her son burnt the bulk of her documents which has made it even harder to trace her or any details. She was from overseas which i guess makes it even harder. Last i heard was that no one in the family had any luck tracing her.

I think witness protection would be a long shot - don't think it would have existed in the 50's?

What an interesting problem, sorry i know you are prob frustrated but i can imaging how you would love to know the answer.

I think the best place to look is hospital records. You know she had two lungs in 1951 but only one by 1956 (did I get that right?)... lungs don't just vanish into thin air do they?
