    Default Weighted Vests

We are currently trialling a weighted vest on DS while at school.
He wears it while sitting at his desk doing school work, and so far so good.

It's on loan from our OT and it is a hand made version.

I've looked at quite a few websites to buy one, but all just look so bulky.

Does anyone use these, and if so, where did you get it from, and is it big and bulky?

A friend had one she made for her son. She used a navy blue polar fleece vest from target and stitched some patches/pockets on across the top of the shoulders and the front and back. Then she made some little bean bags (used dried beans from the whole foods shop). The bean nags were made to fit in the pockets/patches of the vest so she could take them out for easy washing.

It came up really well, and the vest was the same navy as the school uniform so he just blended in and didn't look like he was wearing something different.

    Goodluck!

The one we have on loan is a Target fleece one too.

Unfortunately, I couldn't sew if my life depended on it, and have no one around me that can help me out.
The loan one is quite a rough patch job, but sounds generally like the way you described it, the pockets are sealed with velcro.

Hmmm must find someone who sews

I hope this doesn't offend and I'm sorry to crash your area...
But can I ask what the weighted vest is for? How does it help? I'm not criticising, just genuinly curious, I have never heard of it before.

Also, I'm not a great sewer but I do have a sewing machine and know how to use it. If you can give me some details and maybe photos I could probably knock you one up if its not to complicated.

    Hi

I'm an OT and have worked with kids using weighted blankets/vests etc before.

notquitesupermum - the purpose is for proprioceptive input to help improve on task time for kids with attention and/or sensory issues.

Most departments I've been with have had home made ones, but I've done a quick look - and here's another couple.

    Goodluck

I have such a huge respect for OT's, such an important job good on you.

We would be lost without ours!!

    DE

I moved out of paediatrics when I had my own kids as I didn't want to be "doing therapy" with them - funnily enough - their homework sessions still sound like therapy sessions . However, by the time I'd started my family - I'd had over 10years of experience in paediatrics - so ended up still doing some locum work in developmental and social skills areas.

My daughter had one from CalmingKidsAustralia.com.au and it was pretty compact and cute. You can get different colours, and i bought an iron on patch in her fave character to cute it up a little.

I purchased one from calming kids as well as a weighted blanket.
I'm now a little excited, as is DS.
His blanket is in camo colours and his vest is black.
I like the idea of putting an iron patch character, hmmm he'll have to think real hard as to which one he might like!
