Default Freemasons vs St Vincent's Private? Obstetrician recommendation?

Hello everyone, I am from Melbourne and new to the forum and have just found out that I am 5 weeks pregnant with my first baby!!!!
My husband and I are so happy and we haven't told any family or friends yet, because we are waiting to have our first scan at 6/7 weeks.
My GP has asked me if there is a particular obstetrician that I would like to be referred to and he also told me to think about which hospital I would like to deliver the baby at. I can't believe how early I have to decide and because we are so new to this, it is quite overwhelming...
I have private health insurance and have heard St Vincents Private and Freemasons are great choices. Has anybody given birth at either of these hospitals recently? What were your experiences and which one would you recommend? Any great obstetricians? Appreciate all the advice I can get.

Honestly I would look at what kind of birth you want and go from there

Well I would look at how best to achieve that, if you think hiring a surgeon who is a specialist in complicated pregnancies is the best way to go about doing that then look into that. If you think having someone who is a specialist in normal pregnancy/birth is a better way then go for midwife led care. I know the mybirth website doesn't cover Victoria (I think your in Vic?) but it does have a lot of info on your options and will answer your questions better than me

I am in Vic, but thanks heaps for telling me about the My Birth website. I am going to read through it and do some homework, before I make any decisions.

Sorry I wasn't very clear on the VIC thing, I mean it doesn't have statistics for hospitals in that state but you can always call those hospitals to ask. No worries

This is my first so I haven't experienced the hospital first hand but I have booked the Freemasons. I have had friends that have delivered at both.
My personal decision was that the Freemasons is in a better position for parking (during visits from hubby) and has a lot of the obs working in offices in the same location. And is a private hospital, not just a level on top of the royal women's public.
When visiting friends at Freemasons I also found staff to be very pleasant (we visited after hours one day and she snuck us in still).
THe Freemasons website has a list of obs that work from there, I went with Peter England.
But a word of advice they book out quick so start ringing around!!

I am also in Melbourne and am going to the Royal Women's and have hired a private midwife instead of an OB. We are very happy with our decision and the care so far, and am sure it will help lead us to the type of birth we want, all going well of course.

Going down the OB route was not for us. Just another option to consider! Sorry, I realize this doesn't answer your actual question though!

Thanks edb... What were the rooms like at Freemasons when you visited? I know that I do need to make a decision, because I have heard the obstetricians and hospitals book out quite quickly.
