I simply don't believe that being able to express a prejudiced, offensive opinion is a courtesy that I should bestow upon anyone.

There are lesbian women on this forum who have had their sexual orientation devalued, they've been called unnatural, the opinion was given that they and their partner should not have children and if they do, those children will not be as loved as children born to parents with a penis and a vagina.

Yes it's Kimberlygals opinion and she may not have intended to be hurtful, but her opinion IS hurtful, unjust and bigoted.

I was raised by a loving mother and father who taught me to take a stand against bigotry, so I won't name call or make personal attacks but I sure as heck won't say "Ah well, each to their own".

    Because her opinion is discriminatory.

Mumma Inky - sometimes it is simply the opinion itself that is offensive... it doesn't matter how "black people don't deserve the same rights as white people," is worded, it's the sentiment that's offensive and that causes outrage.

The title of the thread shouldn't ask for opinions... It should be a pro discussion. Otherwise it's not really fair on some posters.

Hitler (who murdered thousands of innocent people) isn't really the same as a piece of paper. Not devaluing the importance of moving forward for equality but saying it was a very inflamed comparison

    Totally agree.

I'm curious as to how Kimberlygal would feel if one of her children announced they were gay later in life? Would she support their choices?

The thread asked a question. An answer was given. I have heard a few people (on BH) say that they are against gay marriage but are to scared to say it for fear if being shot down. So I appreciate an honest being given....but I do wonder this. If someones beliefs are so 'controversial' that it causes people to get upset, brings up terms like offensive and discriminatory...well, wouldn't you just start to question it a little? Wouldn't you start to think you may not be right? Wouldn't you?

I absolutly understand this, but when a thread turns nasty and comments are directed at a particular person, you loose the power to make a change or make a difference as that person will not remember any of the points that were made and turn away from the thread. Whereas a thread that could potentially educate people becomes a "bagging" session to those who disagree, so you loose the connection from "those who disagree" and therefore loose the power to do some good.
I think tolerance is a good thing, we all need to try to understand each other more to be a better society.

    And just to add...

The fact that people have this viewpoint is not really a big deal on its own... but I guess it's that people having this viewpoint is what causes children to be teased because of their parent's sexuality, or for young men to be beaten up simply because they like other men, or for some couples to not be formally recognised as couples... and while that last one doesn't seem like a big deal, it can be. Imagine how you'd feel if you lived with your partner for 20 years and all you wanted was to officially declare yourself and your partner as united legally. It would be so sad to not be allowed to... at the moment, the LNP are leading Qld state government, and REVERSING the decision to allow legal civil unions amongst same sex couples is on their agenda. That's going BACKWARDS... because of bigotry. It's horrible.

If people accepted that there is nothing wrong with being gay, then these things would cease to be issues. Some of us are frustrated that because of hte backwards view of a few, many are treated as lesser people. It's not right, and the attitude is causing harm to other people. It needs to stop.
