Exclamation Looking for trainee Doula who is already Midwife or vice-versa - Brisbane RBWH

I am 38 & expecting bub #3 in May 2012. Going for 2nd VBAC (1st bub 2002 - emergency c-section and 2nd bub 2007 - successful vbac) at Brisbane's RBWH and would like the support of a Midwife who is training to be a Doula, or a Doula who is training to be a Midwife during my labour. The reason for the double-qualification is that I would really like to have someone with medical qualifications at home with me during the early onset of labour to help determine when I'm far enough along to head to hospital. We went to hospital too early with bub #2 after going into labour naturally at 38+ weeks and my labour slowed. I then ended up labouring by myself in the maternity ward for 16+ hours before they were happy to put me in the actual labour/birth room, where bub took another 5+ hours to arrive. We unfortunately can't afford the fee of a fully qualified Doula, hence I'm searching on here, so fingers crossed there is someone out there please! Thanks in advance!! :-)

    Hi chickymumma,
I wanted to reply to your post even though I am not a midwife & doula just in case it might be helpful. Having someone with both sets of skills is an awesome idea if you can find that. I'm wondering if you can't find someone whether a doula could still be useful in the early time to provide emotional support and encouragement. It seems like it's very normal and common for things to slow down when women transfer into hospital, but of course if this birth could take less then 21 hours that would be excellent for you!! Of course every birth is different and who knows what the mystery will be this time around.

The Australian Doula College would be happy to refer students to you, and they could tell you if they know anyone in Brisbane with both qualifications.

I hope you find someone to support you that is a really good fit.

Thanks Anne. It's taken me this long to get back around to looking for a doula again with so much going on in April.

I AM now looking for a trainee Doula, so if you are interested and/or available to assist /support this birth in the next 1 to 3 weeks, please let me know. And also what your fee would be please.

I will make sure I check back to BH every day or 2 from now on ;-)

    Hi Chickymumma,
Wow things are getting close! I'm not sure if I'm totally available in that time frame but I could try to work something out. Could we chat about this or email privately? I don't have the private message function yet on BH. My email is anniecastles(at)hotmail.com

When is your EDD? If it does feel right for us to work together I would be on call for 2 weeks leading up to this and then after if you go "over due". So it depends when that is really as I have a few things happening in the next few weeks where I had planned to be out of town, so I would need to work out what could be changed with that.

Also the fees are charged through my college, they are $352.00 incl GST. This is for 2 visits before hand, being on call for you and being at your birth for as long as needed, and 2 visits afterwards. This does not include an obligation free meeting to decide whether we both feel it's a good fit to work together.

Please email me if you want to see if we can work this out. If it doesn't fit for us I would recommend calling the Australian Doula College to see if they have other students that are available.

Anyway hope to hear from you soon,
    xo
