    Default Sleeping and reflux

Hi there, my little dude has terrible silent reflux. He is ten weeks old and the only way he falls asleep easily is in our arms or a sling. Has anyone ever had much luck with helping a reflux bub fall asleep in a cot? We have it raised and we can sometimes get him to sleep on his side, with gentle patting then move to his back once out to it. Even in our arms it can take anywhere from 30 mins to 4 hours to get him off! Is this what you are experiencing and is it getting any better with age?

    Thx in adv for response

Sounds like ds1, lots of sleeping on us for ages! Is your bub medicated? This can really help. Also we took dd1 for cranial osteopathy which was really effective for him.

It does get better with age! My DD2 had silent reflux and was medicated for 14 weeks! We have a completely different baby! Yes, having cot raised and sleeping bub on side will help... Also keeping bub upright for at least 20 minutes after a feed will help too. It's very hard to get a refluxer to sleep, I also used a hammock for her day sleeps... And we went to the chiro too! HTH...

We had normal reflux and silent sometimes too, and eventually was put on Zantac medication. He was on it till he was just over 6 months. But he also had colic aswell so had trouble with everything for quite a while.
The sitting upright for a good 10-20 minutes after a feed was necessary but even then I wore a lot of milk a few times anyway. But we had his bed raised at the head end, and also had a towel under his head to help raise and also catch the chuck.
But for a little while he was held till he was settled then put to bed to nod off. Dummies helped a bit with the soothing sucking but I'd say medication was the overall fixer!

my bub is 13 months old and is still medicated - until she could sleep on her stomach it was a nightmare.

We raised her cot (Put in on phone books - always knew they where good for something)
Had wedges so that we could sleep her on her side all night and she couldnt roll over (these made such a big difference!)
    Medication- we are using losec
I was about to say dont feed him acidy foods like oranges but at 10w old i doubt that you are!
If you are breastfeeding then try some elimination out of your diet (i had to give up oranges and the biggest struggle - chocolate )

I feed my daughter 5 month old DD to sleep a d then place her in her glider (same sort of seat as a swing) with jer wrap on, so that she is sleeping upright for the first hour or two then transfer her to her bassinett which is slightly elevated. She sleeps soo much better since I've been doing this (since about 4 weeks old) as it lets all the milk settle before she is in her bed. I cannot put her to sleep flat first up or she will just wake up & vomit within 30 mins

Yes that was my DS. I made the mistake of always feeding to sleep which meant of course he would wake when we laid him down. Then we would feed him and rock him upright to get the milk down for half an hour (or more) before putting him down. This, combined with 2 hourly waking meant I was very sleep deprived lol!

It used to take us 4 hours or more every night till he finally fell asleep as well. It was only when he finally was on a decent amount of Losec (which was hard to find a doctor who would prescribe it) that things improved. He got off the Losec at 8 or 9 months old.

We still can't get him to fall asleep in his cot, but we cuddle him to sleep now, or I feed him to sleep for his night sleep, and things are better.

Sorry I don't really have any helpful advice, but just want to say I can relate and I would suggest getting your bub medicated properly and maybe also try chiro?

I know how you feel our DD who is now 5mths old had colic and then went on to have reflux we to could not get her to sleep in her cot the only way she would sleep was to rock her to sleep then let her sleep in our arms, we would try to put her to sleep after a hour or so in her cot if we were lucky she would stay asleep but most of the time she would wake up as soon as we put her down but would sleep in her cot at night i tried all of the herbal medications from the chemist but nothing helped in the end i went to the doctors and asked for a referral to a Pediatrician who then put her on zantac which on its own wasn't helping then went on to prescribe cisapride as well as the zantac we now have a totally different baby she is now happy baby who now self settles in her cot and falls asleep by herself i no longer have to rock her to sleep and now sleeps for 8 hours strait during the night. All you can do is be there for them and just go with whatever they need at the time it does settle in time in the mean time maybe its worth getting a referral to see a Pediatrician and seeing if there is anything they can give you to help your son get through the reflux stage with less pain. discomfort it has made a huge difference in my dd but everyone is different some people don't like to put there babies on medication which is fine. Good luck hope you find some relief soon for both of you and your son

Hi everyone, I wanted to circle back to let you know that we have since put DS on losec and he is starting to sleep a lot better. It's still often a challenge but improving by the day. Today he self-settled and even resettled - I'm in shock! From where we have come from, this is transformational. DS basically screamed the first ten weeks of his life and I could never be sure what I was doing wrong or right.

    Thanks for the earlier responses!
