For myself, I didn't volunteer to be an ambassador but was invited to do so based on my posts and activity on the forum. I'd like to see those selected for "specialty" fields done the same way.

But the "over 1000 post" thing really annoys me. I have only 700 or so posts. But I've been thanked nearly 900 times. I just don't come on here to post "fluff" - or not very often. Most of the time, my posts are for a specific purpose and that "post vs thanks" ratio reflects that. If you start taking high post count into things then you really potentially turn your back on those who want to make a sincere difference.
1000 is just an arbitrary figure - so make it say they've been a member for at least 6 months, or have at least 500 posts - I'd just object to someone with only 20 posts suddenly being an ambassador for something like mental health etc (unless they bring with them some other professional standing)

I wasn't aware though that there was a competition for being thanked?

I think people are still suggesting ideas for names & other thoughts, but we are resolved to make changes to the system over the next couple of weeks.

I like ambassador for regions and advocate for special interest areas.

There are some great name suggestions so far...except maybe 'go-to person'... It kind of reminds me of go-go girl

Can I also just say, I can't speak for others but I really resent the comments about ambassadors being "wannabe mods". I think it's quite offensive to those who work really hard in their chosen area of interest out of sheer passion for the subject. An ambassador is nothing like a mod, and to suggest the ambassador is just wanting to be a mod really denigrates the role and the work put into the role.

(Oh and I personally would never, ever want to be a mod! )

What about 'champion' or 'guardian' ... do either of them make sense?

Although 'champion' is a weird word too. I can mean someone who supports/advocates something ... ie. championing a cause.

But then if someone is Breastfeeding Champion ... newbies might think they've won something. Like a gold medal at the breastfeeding olympics!!!
