It's one thing to seek an opinion on something and another thing entirely to try and fit a diagnosis. You're setting yourself up for a lot of misdirection if you post things like this on a forum.

There is simply no substitute for a doctor's examination.

From what you write, all sounds normal. Poo is meant to be smelly and messy. Diahorrea is profuse and watery and its appearance quite distinctive. Of the other ailments that have been named, there are clear symptoms apart from bowel movements that are apparent.

This demonstrates that, again, before searching for a diagnosis, see your doctor first.

I think the OP was being a bit tongue in cheek about the whole 'diagnose my son' thing.

It could be many things OP but if he is happy and healthy otherwise I wouldn't worry about it as it is likely to be the normal toddler diarrhea I mentioned. If however he appears malnourished or has stomach pains or vomiting then I would get him checked for allergies or intolerances.

DS2 was diagnosed with this last year. All fine now.

Wow. I'm wondering how many times I mentioned the fact that I'll be seeing the doctor this week? I was just Googling and thought I would check out other people's experiences. I like to go to the doctor armed with ideas and a little background knowledge, it doesn't mean I'm trying to "fit a diagnosis".

I'm very familiar with the smelliness and messiness of poo. I am posting about my third child; I've handled my share of nappies. I feel there is something wrong and I'm not sure who you are to try to negate that.

ETA: Have you even read my posts?!

My DS2 was also diagnosed with toddler diarrhea by his paediatrician. Apparently any foods with sugar in it (including fruit, etc) will pass through him too quick for him to digest properly. Apparently it doesn't cause any damage to the stomach (so they are quite happy and healthy apart from the messy nappies) and they grow out of it by the time they are 5 years old.

So did you need to cut out fruit from his diet?

Sort of. The paediatrician said that having the foods that go straight through him doesn't hurt him at all so it's no big issue if he still has it. However, I cut it down quite a bit because I hate dealing with his nappies when he has too much. Also it makes it harder to toilet train him if he is having diarrhea all the time (Not that I have started to try but the paed says that it makes it quite difficult).

Toilet training has been a concern of mine; I just don't see how it would be possible with things as they are!

What you describe makes a lot of sense to me; he isn't uncomfortable, isn't failing to thrive, but he definitely isn't digesting fruit! Thanks heaps, will report back in a couple of days with news from the doctor...

I just stumbled across this thread again, I had completely forgotten about it!

The doctor wasn't concerned at all, just advised that we cut out the worst offending fruits and increase the more binding foods. It's still all pretty messy, but most days he only does one now... thank heavens for small mercies, hey?
