I don't know about in general...but my sister's is 1 carat all up (center diamond and then smaller ones on the sides), and that's quite nice.
The one I've picked out is 2

    Dorian Oliver - 10.7.12

Look for good clarity and colour. A diamond can be big but not worth it cos it's flawed etc. also I was always told to buy just under the ct. You don't pay as much and you can't tell. Mine is about 98points. So just under one carat and I think it's nice!!!
Have fun. Ring shopping is great!! Congratulations.

The rule is follow the 4 c's

    Cut
    Colour
    Clarity
    Carat

It really depends if you want a one carat size, do you prefer one big stone or the equivalent made up of smaller stones.

I love the 3 piece sets.

We got married 6 years ago & the wedding ring I picked out was voted to expensive, so we saved a bit getting a similar one made up by a gold smith. I remember it being quite alot of money anyway.

Well I found the receipt the other day and it cost us $500!!!! I was shocked it was so little as the friends I have met since were spending $4000 & up!

So work out what your budget it is first. Then go shopping. And sleep on it. Do some Internet research overnight to check prices. Only then should you buy it

This. I think mine is 3/4 carat. Can't remember! It's not huge, but is a flawless stone with clear colour (or whatever the best colour is).

If be looking for the best quality diamond you can afford rather than buying a huge one that has flaws.

Mine is 1.2 carats all up, with centre stone 0.75. It was $12k 4 years ago.To me a wow ring is 1.5 carats. Like My friend just got an amazing ring which is single solitaire 1.5If i only had $3k to spend i would go big but poorer quality. But if i had plenty to spend i woyld go quality over size

I have a 1.0 ct colour d (best possible) and vvs1 clarity (3rd best possible) plus two matching 0.3 cts one either side in emerald cut. It cost 9.5k and is valued at 18k, we had the stones imported from Antwerp and paid euro so got a great exchange.
I get wow's all the time, it looks big on my tiny finger.
I think anything above 0.5 is big enough, it also depends on the cut and setting style as to how big it looks!
    Hope that helps

I chose a ring I liked, which suited me, rather than worrying about cost.

I think mines .75. I agree with the others, go for something you like that's good quality over the size. Mines emerald cut so had to have good clarity (flaws show up more in a cut like that), I think it was abou $5k, my husband got it made.
I used to work in a jeweler and we had this disgusting ring that was 2 carat but so flawed, it was just awful, I couldn't bring myself to sell it! I've also seen some that are really badly cut so look bigger/smaller than their proper weight (carat), they don't sparkle properly so look out for that!
