Default When people bad-mouth others in front of you, not realising you do/think the same...

    Does this happen to others?

My ILs are totally different in their parenting to me, so I've heard so much now that I'm kind of used to it...

    But some examples...

MIL and SIL were talking about how WRONG and NEGLECTFUL it was to not smear your baby girl in nappy rash cream every single nappy change. They went as far as to say that parents who don't do this should have their children removed from their care. I have only ever used these products when there was cause to... lol.

They also decided that circumcision was an appropriate topic at Christmas lunch at my place... and went on about how disgusting and dirty people who choose not to RIC are. My father is done, but he and my mother decided it wasn't something necessary for my brother. Insulting my parents, insulting my "dirty" brother... nice.

So what examples have you got of people not considering their audience when going on a rant like this?

One of our friends was going on and on to my DH about how he doesn't like another mutual friend's girlfriend.

He obviously forgot that she is godmother to DS so we obviously love her.

As someone who FF from pretty early on, I heard a few of these types of comment - and still do.

Things like "So and so has started bottlefeeding already. I think she was finding it hard, but we all know it's hard - you just have to push through. I think she just wanted her husband to be able to do night feeds/ the baby to sleep through/ to drink wine again. I don't think she really tried hard enough, to be honest. I mean I found it painful at first, but then I learnt XYZ/ spoke to a lactation consultant and it's fine now - you just have to stick with it." (at some point person talking realises that I FF) "Oh - but I know there are some people who can't do it. It's just she didn't really TRY - not like you did."

I'm sure I'm not alone here: When a friend goes on about how fat she is... And she is skinnier than you...

Or makes a comment about somebody's weight who is slimmer than you.

I have had people ranting about teen parents and single parents in front of me, completely oblivious to the fact that I was BOTH....then when I point that out, try to take it back by saying "Oh but not YOU...you're nothing like them". Stereotypes much?!

This is the good thing about getting older, I now speak up and share MY opinion and my opinion about their opinion....

Family members no longer pass opinions about dole bludgers, aboriginals, LGB people, refugees/asylum seekers or single mothers (to name a few issues) when we gather together.

For example, an elderly cousin will NEVER ever again make a derogatory comment about gay marriage, she who has been married 3 times and had at least one affair.

Other family members also know to not ask me to be quiet, as I have pointed out that I don't pass opinions until someone else pipes up and I will NOT shut up and put up with bigotry.

Unfortunately, I am one of those people! I constantly walk around with my foot in my mouth, is hereditary though.
