Just got a press release about an upcoming episode of Insight on SBS that I thought might interest some on you.

INSIGHT: Removing Kids

"This week Insight puts kids in the spotlight and asks them whether children are better off with their biological families – even when it is abusive or dysfunctional.

Some child protection experts say children are left for too long in unsafe homes because the system is wrongly geared towards the rights of the parents. They say money is being wasted on family intervention services that simply don’t work, and vulnerable children should be removed earlier and permanently adopted out.

But others say a tougher approach would wrongly punish lower socio-economic families, and say parents should be given chances and support to improve their behaviour.

Insight asks kids themselves just how bad a family situation needs to be before a child is removed, and whether they think we've got the balance right.
