My nan is an amazing cake decorator, she's been doing it for decades and won lots of awards... Me.... Well I didn't take after her =\ certainly not as creative or talented. I like to make cakes but just slap some frosting on and its all done.

At christmas I attempted a prettier cake, I was happy with it for my first go. The cake was just a butter cake, coloured to be red as red can be and then I tried to make look like a tree. The cake was about 40cm long and the presents were decent sized too. Except my present were wonky ) They were a last minute Idea with my left over cake.

To those with the rainbow layers, can you please share how it's done? I assume food coloring, but do you cook each layer separately?
I just separated out the batter and added the different colours and then layered them on top of eachother in the pan...

The gel colours are the best to use for the coloured layers, really helps the colours POP!

RR, I use Orchard Icing from any supermarket CLICK (scroll down to the first pic). But you can buy bulk lots from cake supply websites. A baking friend suggested for black icing it's best to buy ready made black icing as even with the gel colours it's tricky to get a true black without altering the texture of the icing. I bought some 'Cake Art' black and found it great.

    Happy icing BHers!

    Sam

Substitute the corn syrup for golden syrup. Usually triple the recipe and need a bit more icing sugar to suit the texture im looking for
