When you say you encouraged was that using a walker or holding him or something else?

Nope I've never used a walker... just making them walk along holding my fingers, or if they'd pulled themselves up on something I'd try encourage them to walk over to me. If they were leaning no a ride on car, I'd try get them to push it over to me... just basically whenever they were on their feet I'd try to get them to make steps iykwim

DS 11 months old. He was cruising around the furniture from about 8 months. Then he started to get really confident and only lightly have his fingers touching for guidance. Then just let go and started walking.

First steps at 8 months, confident at 9 months, chasing the cats to chew their tails by 11 months. No encouragement, I liked it better when I could put her down somewhere and she stayed put.
