I can't help with doc suggestions Ange, but I just wanted to wish you good luck!

We did IVF with ICSI (to inject sperm into egg) and we now have a beautiful 10 week old baby girl from our first cycle

We tried for a year after the reversal, but DH had a low count & poor motility from it being so long since he originally had the snip.

Hubby had his orginal Vas done about 10 years ago. He is still recovering from surgery and we are just waiting until we can start TTC (about 2 or so weeks - YAY!!). After 3 BFNs with IVF I'm looking forward to trying the good old fashioned way I really hope he gets some swimmers back

Hope there are some people wanting to join in and share your story. I know there are people with failed reversals but I have seen a lot of good stories too on overseas forums and hoping that there are some other people on bubhub who want to chat while TTC.

    Hi All,

Good to see this thread active again. DH had reversal almost 2 years ago & we are still TTC. We are both still hopeful that it will just happen naturally and are going to give it another good 6 months before looking at IVF with ICSI.

Arlais, if it's not to personal, how much were you out of pocket for the IVF & how invasive was it for your DH for them to extract the sperm?

i am about to embark on a very tricky journey where the odds are seriously against us but we both want to try.

DH is 51, I'm 38. He's had two older kids, I've been able to conceive.

he had vasectomy reversal 20 yrs ago :-(

Looking for a brilliant doc anywhere in nsw or Qld. I hear. Dr Woolcott is good, and also Metricentre has been mentioned. Any others?

he doesn't have health cover but I might increase mine incase we go down ivf route.

It's great to read success stories. DH is very healthy. We don't have details of doc who did it originally.

    love any suggestions of doctors.

    thank you

    Hi Ange,

I just checked my emails for you and have found that Dr Vucak at QLD Plastic Surgery does VR's although his fee is $7000 plus the other charges on top. You may also want to look into Dr Lok on ( 02) 8734 3395 who does VR's at Genea Day Surgery in Sydney too.
Just another couple of places i have come across during this journey although i have heard great things about Dr Woolcott and also the Metrocentre, but the thing that put us off the Metrocentre is they aren't affiliated with Private Health Insurance although you said your DH doesn't have cover so it may not be of a concern for you anyway We have taken out full top cover on DH so we can claim back a lot of the costs for the hospital/theatre fees so it is important to us to be able to get that.

    Hi waiting26,

Like Arlais, we had a VR done (Sydney in December 2012 - 15 years post vasectomy), but after 10 months of TTC naturally, DH still had v low sperm count and motility, and we were worried that the odds of conceiving naturally were stacked very much against us. After seeing a female fertility specialist at IVF Australia we decided to go down the ICSI route, as neither of us were getting any younger and really didn't want to wait much longer.

I haven't been on this thread for a very long time as TTC naturally was such an emotional experience for me (so I feel for you 100% ) but I am pleased so say that we conceived our beautiful DD on our first round of ICSI. She was born in July 2013 and is now 11 months old.

I was soooo worried that they would have to do a sperm retrieval on DH when I had my eggs collected as they "forgot" to freeze any sperm during the VR, but we were able to conceive her using the very few sperm DH had in his ejaculate. We also have 3 frozen embryos to use in future so it was well worth it.

From memory, our out of pocket IVF expenses (after Medicare and HCF rebates) were around the $4000 mark. We did have to pay about $8000 upfront, but you get a big chunk back within the month.

All the best for your journey - I really hope you have a BFP very soon.

I think it worked out to be around $3k out of pocket, but PHI paid for the egg retrieval and transfer, so if you don't have health insurance it would be more than that.

We had to pay $8200 upfront for the cycle before getting anything back from Medicare, but you also need to factor in an assessment cycle and consider charges for extra tests and medications. Once I was pregnant we had some further testing done, I saw an Obstetrician, delivered via caesarean in a private hospital and bub needed to see a paediatrician several times and a couple of ultrasounds on her hips from being breech. So it's been a very expensive year medically speaking!

DH's sperm count is low at approx 5 million, but still enough not to need surgical extraction.

    Hey Ange

Do you want just 1 more? If so I would look into IVF as it may be more cost effective and quicker.

We went through metro centre on the gold coast. My little boy is 1 next week and I just found out this morning that I am pregnant again he was 12 yrs from original vasectomy.

    Good luck
