Angry Urea breath test - c14

    Hi,
I am now 8 weeks pregnent.
I did a urea breath test - c14 when i was 7 weeks pregnent. After the test I did some research in the internet and found out that the test involves small amount of radiation and not recomended for pregnent women. I am now very worried thinking about the possible impact of radiation. So far i have visited two different doctors for their advice , they expressed their concern but yet they told me they are not expert in this test. I also went back to the doctor who prescribed me the test, he apparently was not aware of the radiation involved in the test and not recomended for pregnent women. I went back to the pathology for their advice and they tried to convience me that the radiation involved in the test shouldn't impact on the baby. But i am still upset and worried. I wouldn't have done this test if i knew it involves radiation. However i am praying to god for healthy baby.
This is worrying me day and night. I would like to get someone's expert advice on this if possible.
    Thanks
    Kanchi

    Hi,
I just read your post about having a C14 urea breath test whist pregnant.
I am a nuclear medicine technologist, and i perform these studies on patients all of the time. C14 breath tests work in a way that the tablet you swallowed dissolves in the stomach and if the h pylori bug is present it emits a gas which is captured in the breath sample which was taken after you swallowed the capsule.
The C-14-urea capsule contains a tiny amount of radioactive material which passes out of your body in a day or so in the urine and breath. The amount of radioactive exposure from the test is less than you will normally receive in one day from nature. (i.e. natural background radiation to which every individual on earth is exposed to everyday.)
It is such a small amount of radiation that it is very hard to detect and is completely safe for both you and your baby. I worked through both of my pregnancies in the nuclear medicine field exposed to high amounts of radiation right up until 2 weeks before their births and i have two beautiful happy and very healthy girls.
Dont stress over this as it is completly safe and your baby has not been harmed in any way. If you have and questions dont hesitate to ask.

Thanks heaps, much appreciated. You have given me a big releif.

One thing i still couldn't get though ; why every health sites including the pathology site are saying the test is not recommended for pregnent women then?

    Thanks

I have but not when pregnant. They can quantify radiation though, for eg an average X-ray is only what u get from a few days environmental radiation do if your not having them daily it's no biggie, probably similar with the breath test, it would be pretty short lived if think

Default C14 breat test when pregnant

Hi, just knowing that I am pregnant today and sadly i had my C14 test few days before. Went to my GP and she concerns about the radioactivity that can affect the baby- apparently it can cause abnormality. Anyone knows more details or had this experience before? Reading Kanchi's post abd wondering if you and baby are ok. Thanks in advance
