Gardeners in a tropical climate?

Would love to hear from anyone gardening in a tropical climate?

This decribes my climate: Hot humid summer (average January maximum temperature > 30 degrees C). Warm winter. Extends across the north of Australia from Canarvon through Port Hedland, Broome, Darwin, Cairns, and south to Rockhampton.

Do you mean as a hobby or as a job? I garden in a tropical climate, but only as a hobby

its awesome at the moment everything is going crazy from the heat and rain!

IM in perth and i love gardening. The most important thing i think during the summer is SHADE!! Ive just put a cheap shade sail over my garden and it works a treat!
Atm i have peas, beans, onions, rocket, basil, spinach, tomato and sage in my garden. I water every night with a hose and my garden is going CRAZY!!

I germinate most things from seeds cos they're cheaper but sometimes ill go to our local nursery and grab some cheap seedlings. I only pay $1-$2 for seedlings so if they die its not a big deal. I find with some nurseries they have alot of seedlings that are actually out of season. Theres a farm close to me that grows seedlings that are ONLY in season!

The best thing I've done to develop a garden in the Darwin area was subscribe to Sub Tropical Gardening Magazine. It's Australian, and all the contributers are tropical gardening experts. Highly recommend it, especially the first 12 issues.

Thanks I get the gardenate emails which is great!

DS and I have just planted beans, cucumbers, tomatoes and lots of herbs. Growing seeds in egg cartons and DS is having lots of fun with it.

DH just made me a hydroponic table to grow lettuce, spinach and herbs so thats pretty exciting.

Have started my compost bin and now to work out how to begin the worm farm. Anyone got any suggestions? Found a relin worm farm under the house...
