Another who has watched too much Entourage to see it as anything but a boys' name.

Unless, as you say, it was short for something like Arianna .

I'm so glad you asked this OP -- I've been wondering the same thing. We find boys names so much harder and both like the name Ari. I know of 2 girls and DH went to school with a boy. But I definitely prefer it for a boy.

Our daughter is named Ariana and when I was pregnant hubby and I called her Ari but since she's been born we have only called her Ariana! I think Ari is lovely for a boy or girl.

I think of Ari Goldman and he is very male.

But I think it could be unisex. I think it'd be a cute girls name too. I like it.

I prefer it for a girl but short for Arielle or Ariana.

I definitely see it as both.
When I have seen it for a girl, it's usually a shortened form of something. I do see Ari by itself as more of a male name, but like it for either.
