Question IVF success with only 1 follicle??

    Hi Everyone
I'm looking for some stories/advice. I have severe endo with blocked tubes and low AMH so we're doing IVF. This is our 3rd cycle and I found out today at my scan that it looks like there is only 1 follicle. We've been given the option of cancelling the cycle but I'm not sure what the right thing to do is.
I know there is a big risk that they may not get an egg from the follicle at pick up or it may not fertlize but then again there's still a chance so we're very tempted to just go with it and hope we're not wasting a whole lot of money.

I'm interested to hear from anyone else whose be where I am now and what you did.

Kyllara- Have your clinic given you the option of converting the cycle to IUI instead of IVF? It might save you some money but still give the follicle/egg a chance at fertilising. I've known of other ladies on here who have done this when only 1 or 2 follicles have developed.

I went to pick up with 2 follicles but neither had eggs. I had to do it I had to know. After 3 cancelled cycles I was desperate to make it to pick up. It was a waste of money and time but i had to know. For 1 follie I would cancel and stim again. Good luck.

Thank you Lilypily and Vesper for your thoughts.
Vesper - they did mention IUI but my tubes are both thought to be blocked so IUI seems a bit pointless as the eggs can't make it out. As it stands I've taken the trigger shot and we're due to do egg pick up on Wednesday but I guess I can still change my mind tomorrow. Part of me is like Lilypily and I just want to try everything I can but the other part of me doesn't want to waste all that money.

Hi, personally I know DH and I will choose to cancel the cycle, with one follie there are just too many uncertainties to consider. What dose are you on and how far along are you on your stim?

I have seen at least one success with a single egg but you are talking abouut one follie which we are not sure if there is an egg.

    Hi Mom2OneDS
I'm on 350IU gonal-f and have had 10 nights of that. The 1 follicle is about 20mm so we triggered tonight. Now just have to decide whether or not to go through with egg pick up on Wed morning. There were other little things on the scan that could be follicles but are more likely endometriosis coming back.
Last cycle I was on 350iu gonal f as well and got 2 eggs. I started chinese herbs at the beginning of the year so I'm wondering if that impacted on the gonal f and made it less effective or if it's just my eggs finally running out.

    Kyllara,

Its a difficult decision. I know. I'm up to cycle 13 and have only ever gotten 2-3 eggs except for one freak cycle where I had 6 but then 3 were no good for micro injection anyway.

I am 43 and also have severe endo and also have seen a chinese natural medicine specialist initially for herbs and now acupuncture.

Its true that any follicle may be empty but all of life is risk. In my clinic, they also do this double wash out thing to make sure if there's an egg it's retrieved.

The size of your follicle is big so perhaps just ask them if your hormones are still ok. I have been told by a FS that if the progesterone is very high, the quality of the egg is usually not good but just check that is truly correct.

I have always elected to go ahead but not without trepidation.

Very best of luck at deciding and also, fingers crossed there's an egg and a good one and that it not only fertilizes but sticks all the way to the end.

My thoughts and best wishes are with you,

Hopefully you'll let us know how you go if you feel up to it.

Default Ps re dose of gonal f

Forgot to say that 350IU is lower dose. You can be increased to 450.....by your specialist obviously. Don't do it yourself!!!

Thanks Giohara for your thoughts and advice about the gonal f dose - I'll put that on my list of things to ask the FS at our next visit.
DH and I chatted about it last night and we've decided to go ahead with EPU tomorrow. We know there's a risk of not getting an egg or making it to transfer but we want to know we've tried everything. Will let you guys know how it goes!

Hi, I dont think chinese herbs will interfere with your response if they are prescribed properlyy by a trusted practitioner. I am also on it and have been since May. This month is my last go with Chinese herbs. It didnt help with giving me a bfp last cycle while on them. They are ex stuff.

Do you have your hormone levels checked? Cos if your E2 (estrogen) level is high, it is highly possible you have a chance. Each follicle/egg produce between 200 to 800 unit? of E2 during stim.

All the best for giving it a shot, you never know. Indeed life is full of risks. Whatever decision you make, stick with it and have no regrets.
