Question Antibiotics for an 8 mth old??

I took DS to the doctors today as he hasn't been 100% since around Saturday. I wasn't really worried, but I just thought I should get him checked out as his symptoms were lingering a bit (tiny cough, slight blocked nose & felt a little cold/clamy last night).

Anywho, the doc checked him out and noted that he had a bit of redness in his throat and to come back in two days to get it rechecked. If on Thursday it's still red he's going to prescribe antibiotics for him.

Does anyone have experience in a situation like this? I'm a little bit uneasy about the prospect of giving him antibiotics. I will mention this to the doc on Thursday, but I thought I'd get some experiences/opinions?

**I know we're not doctors, but we are mums & dads!**

Sounds like a sensible doctor by not just throwing a prescription at you already! I took DD to the doctor when she was 10 months old for a cold and he prescribed antibiotics that she didn't need!

My son's had ABs quite a few times, mostly for ear infections (I think he has a funny shaped ear like my partner and is prone to them).

I think it's fairly standard for young kids to have them if it appears to be an infection.

They do make the poo go a bit yucky, as I think they disturb the bacteria. You can get that drinking yoghurt (yackult? - phonetic spelling) or inner health plus have a liquid but you would have to check the age range.

I only use antibiotics if the body is not coping, I personally prefer not to use them unless absolutely necessary. I usually go for a diagnosis maybe grab a script so I don't have to go back but I rarely fill it I have once taken DS1 back for reassessment and he was fine, just took him a bit longer to recover.
