No I think the package stuff is gross! Iron isn't a concern for me, we delay cord clamping and breastfeed.

I'm against it because I think it's an over processed filler, it's not food at all IMO.

Eta sorry for the double post, I skimmed the thread and your question caught my eye.

I did give my DD rice cereal, but over the time that I gave it to her she probably swallowed about a tablespoon of it, which begs the question - why did I bother?. I will not inflict it on my next bub. DD's actual first food was sweet potato.

DS loves it.. we use Rafferty's Organic. Tired farex but he hated that. At the moment he has it with fruit for breakfast, gradually upping the fruit and lowering the rice cereal. As far as I can tell it tastes like his formula, kinda sweet. ~shrugs~ if it were that bad for us there's be an awful lot of us in an awful lot of trouble. Soon, we'll probably move onto porridge and later weet bix with fruit. I'm ok with Rice Cereal.

I wouldn't go as far as saying I am against rice cereal, I certainly wouldn't give someone a bad parent award if they fed it to their children, but we didn't use it because I preferred to give my children fresh foods. Our first food I am pretty sure was pureed apple, up until they were having 3 meals a day they were usually offered pureed fruit (avo, banana, apple, berries, mango, pear) or veg (sweet potato, spinach, broccoli, squash) were all pretty big hits. It was a bit trial and error in the beginning. When they started having breakfast, they would have organic rolled oats, with some kind of pureed fruit mixed in (banana, pear, apple or berries usually) and a little bit breastmilk(fullcream milk when older)

And OP why wouldn't you give liver? My kids have liver and love it.

I only offered Rice cereal because that was the first thing I was 'told' to give. My DS didnt like it on it's own, so I mixed it with mashed apple, pear etc.
I also offered it because I was told that babies after 6 months of age needed to start eating iron and that Rice cereal had a good source of iron. What can I offer that has a good source of iron (to a 6 month old)?

    My reasons are the same.

It's just like feeding them glue IMO. If someones bubba likes it, that's awesome, but blergh. I just couldn't do it lol. I wanted my bubs to enjoy their food!!

We've used quinoa cereal, pear, avocado, sweet potato as first foods. Nutritious and low allergyn

I think OP means that she is against the current recommendation of feeding rice cereal as a first food, as we all know up until recently that's what the medical profession recommended,( and unfortunately some still do!) when in theory I think it was introduced in the early 1900,s when Gerber and Heinz made everyone think their babies needed artificial iron fortified mush!( before that everyone was feeding them fresh food!) I think it's just become the done thing whereas now as we are all discovering again fresh is best and BLW everyone is going against what maybe their parents did!
