I wash my hands anyway but I also sanitise with gel if it was a horrible bathroom. The people I know who don't wash say they just sanitise after they walk out the door (because you are likely to touch the door etc).
Thank you for that insight - from now on if I see someone *not* washing their hands, i'm just going to imagine them walking outside and cleaning their hands with sanitizer

I rinse with water, then use hand sanitiser after I leave the toilet area (as in, no longer have to touch doors to go anywhere).

I use soap most of the time. Sometimes I don't. I always wash though... there's this really gross smelling soap at the ILs place, it makes me feel like throwing up whenever I've used it, so I simply don't anymore.

As for pooping away from home... it's something I used to avoid but not I have either IBS or dumping syndrom and have little choice in the matter (other than doing it in my knickers... lol).

Don't mean to sound rude or nasty SORRY!!!!

    BUT....

I don't know how people can consciously NOT wash their hands after using the toilet or after handling animals. I wash my hands twice with soap after going to the bathroom and twice if not more after handling animals or changing nappies. If I hold an animal I have to change my whole outfit I feel I can't get clean as well as washing my hands/arms.

I hate knowing people have just used the bathroom and not cleaned their hands it drives me insane.

I dont need to change outfits. Our cats live inside and sleep on the couch..so that would take up some time..
I dont wash twice either..as it screams OCD to me..lol

We are actually instructed by the infection control department, in the hospital I work in, that the hand sanitizer (we use avagard) is better at killing bugs and preferable to use in place of soap and water. We are instructed to use hand sanitizer most of the time and only use soap and water if we have visible soiling on our hands... Eg. Poo, dirt etc.

A couple of time a year we have special inservices where we are given special spray on our hands and then instructed to wash or sanitize as normal. They then use a special blue light to show the areas that are missed. Those who use the hand sanitizer usually do better at this.

We also regularly get our fingers plated and sent to the lab before and after performing our hand hygiene of choice. 3 days later we get the results of what has grown. Again, those who use hand sanitizer usually grow many less organisms than those who wash.

I work in a NICU where infection control is very important. We are regularly tested on our hand hygiene. No matter wether you use sanitizer or hand washing, a lot of the effectiveness does come down to how vigorously you rub your hands together and your technique. Most people miss the bits in between each finger and the thumb is quite often missed too.

    * Damn you autocorrect...you are killing me! *

Even if I'd thought about the taps & soap I don't think I *could* go to the toilet without washing my hands. It's total habit.
