    Default Necessity of 12wk scan?

Do I need to have a 12 wk scan? I'm 9 weeks today and am booked into the birth centre at RPA in Sydney. My first appointment isn't until Feb 17th when I'll be 15 weeks.

I had a scan at 5w6d (to rule out ectopic as I've had one previously) and a free follow up at 7w6d at which everything looked perfect, heard heartbeat etc.

I'm not worried as I assume if I needed a 12wk scan the birth centre would've booked me in earlier or told me to organise one myself. But it just seems that EVERYONE gets one? Should I just leave it or call the birth centre and see what they say? Thanks!

The 12 week scan is to screen for downs syndrome mainly.

My doctor told me it is an optional scan.

Personally, my DP and I wouldn't terminate even if our baby was high risk for downs, but we had the scan anyway as I love and take every opportunity to see bubs.

The 12 week scan is also known as the NT scan. They do a very thorough check of every little aspect of bubs, including measuring the fold of skin at the back of the neck. Along with your age related risk and a blood test, they can tell you the chance of your bub have Down's Syndrome or another genetic anomaly.

Besides, the scans at specialist ultrasound clinics are UNBELIEVABLE. Its hard to believe its the same technology as your doctor's office. We did the major scans at 12w4 and 19weeks. I've posted pics on my flickr page if you're interested.

We had absolutely no intention of terminating our IVF bub, but went ahead with the scan so that if there was something wrong, we would have time to get used to the idea.

I only had 18 week scan last pregnancy, and will do same this time.

My rationale is the same as missiemack's.

I think it is an optional scan but of course I went for it because any opportunities I have to see my baby, I will take!

Thanks everyone! I will just wait until I see the midwives then, as much as I would love to see the little one again I can't justify the cost and I wouldn't get an amnio/terminate anyway. Thanks!
