I had always assumed teachers were taught grammar/spelling in order to teach it, not sure where i got this idea from (probably just seemed logical in my head).

Year 6 teacher was adamant intention is spelt intension. Even marked my son wrong on his test. I let it go. He knows how to spell it. Too bad they don't. I'm sure I'm labelled "that parent" too sometimes. Sorry for caring

Sadly, spelling and grammar is not given the attention it deserves at school.

For example - a friend of mine is a primary teacher and I was watching her do some marking one day. I pointed out a spelling error in one of the kids' books, she said she wouldn't correct it as it was maths homework.

I've just started a teaching degree. My lecturer's posts on the discussion boards are riddled with spelling and grammatical errors. It doesn't inspire much confidence

Would it be weird if I followed him around correcting his posts?

Please, please correct teachers! I'm sick of seeing grammatical and spelling errors on my 'educated' colleagues' work. If they don't know, how can they fix it?

But the problem is that grammar particularly has largely been absent from English teaching for about the last 25+ years so those doing teaching degrees have not been taught it. And it is generally not addressed in the teaching qualifications because they are doing other stuff which often has no relation to the realities of teaching (another bugbear of mine!)

I had the same issue with a lecturer a few years ago for an online Uni subject on Communication! His writing was seriously lacking in spelling and grammar, and his forum posts were the hardest to understand of all the lecturers I had.

Maybe send an anonymous letter to her? Or the principal? Seriously, I could not let spelling errors go. The teachers, of all people, are the ones I expect to have perfect spelling and grammar if they're the ones teaching our kids!

I managed a restaurant and employed a lot of Uni students. One girl was studying early childhood education and wrote on the blackboard 'Happy Farthers Day".

And because grammar was so sadly lacking in the curriculum for so long, most of them weren't taught it at school either.
