Gifted. Gifting. What's the deal with that word? I was under the impression gift was a noun. When did it become a verb? I can't stand it.

It's been in the dictionary as a verb for ages.

Well, you try to edit something in a subtle and 'that didn't happen' manner, and something strange happens and the formatting gets screwed up. Sigh...

What's ages? And which word? Gifted (shudder) is. Gifting isn't.

    Gift as a verb.

    The History of “Gifting”

You may be surprised to learn that according to the Oxford English Dictionary, "gift" has been used as a verb for nearly 400 years. Here’s an example from 1801 from the “History of France” (1):

Parents were prohibited from selling, gifting, or pledging their children.

    from Grammar Girl.

Yes I read that. I still hate the word and it still doesn't explain the abhorrent use of 'gifting'.

DH's mum is from Scotland and so some of his grammar drives me mad.

Asking the dogs "Do you want fed?"
It's not do you want fed, it's do you want TO BE fed!!!

or "Do you want outside?" instead of "Do you want TO GO outside?"
