Is there more than one pair?

Because if there is just one pair isn't that an acceptable use of an apostrophe?

A pair is singular so it is ok to use 'is' and not 'are'. If there were two pairs them it would be 'are' ...

    I think?

As in 'the pair is'? I'm confused with what is actually correct now.

I saw "definately' on a spelling list in the year 2 classroom next to my DD's the other day - what hope have children got of learning correct spelling if the teacher is teaching that in year 2?!

But if 'pair' is a term for more than one, it should be 'are' not 'is'. As far as I was taught, anyway. No?

But pair is the collective noun so in itself is singular. I thought "pair is" was right as well.
