DD was in a big bed with a side rail at 14 months. We put an old foam mattress under her bed and left it out a bit in case she ever fell out. She is now 2 years 10 months and has never fallen out. I can't remember how long she had the side rail on but I know it was definitely off by the time she was 2.

This thread is interesting as my DS is nearly 16 months and lately has shown a lot of interest in my bed... He loves to climb up and hop under my doona and put his head on the pillow. He also loves to jump on my bed! It's fun! So I've also been thinking he's nearly ready for his own bed, but I thought 2-3 was the recommended age, but it seems many of you are transitioning earlier than that....

Still, he still doesn't mind his cot so I'll hold off until I feel confident he won't fall out of a 'big' bed. Currently, he still moves around his cot a lot when asleep.

Also, for the first 5 months he slept with me.... So I can't wait until he can come sleep with me again
