I make sure I always include the true meaning of the holiday to my children, as an ancient pagan celebration of the longest day of the year.
It's actually Winter Solstice and the shortest day of the year AM. As with most things it's base is from living in the Northern hemisphere.

Same as a PP I've been stewing about this. Just because we do the whole Santa thing, doesn't mean we give into the entire commercialisation of the holiday.
For our family (and this includes our extended families) gives gifts to the kids, yes, but the purpose of the holiday is to spend time with the family and enjoy each others company. In fact, as our families are spread out throughout Aus, we rarely do anything on the 25th of December, choosing instead to get together after all the rush and fuss of the holiday period.

I do hope that you will teach your kids your own values about this holiday, but also teach them to have respect for the way others choose to celebrate.

Anyway, I'm not really religious, we believe in God but aren't regular church goers, I believe myself to be a student of the bible though.

Jesus wasn't born on December 25. The Christmas holiday was stolen from the Pagan's. People are always going to give gifts, take holidays and shock horror believe in Santa. We love the Santa side of Christmas. I wasn't going to do Santa with my kids but he's everywhere and he's fun!

You can always carol a la Full Metal Jacket ("Happy Birthday dear Jesus.") but don't rag on other people for spoiling the true meaning of Christmas when in reality it's winter solstice.

As other's have said, Christmas is a rip off of a pagan celebration.
That aside, it's your call to tell your kids Santa isn't real... Just like I tell mine that I think god isn't real. We celebrate Christmas in our own way. My kids are a bit old for Santa (but were firm believers!) but they still love the presents, the family gathering and the food. To us, it's a day to spend time with loved ones, indulge in great food and exchange gifts.
I respect everyone's right to their own beliefs. I *personally* don't beleive in pushing my beliefs on the kids, they are free to choose as they wish, and we have books on world religions on the shelf for them and have had many lively discussions on different religions. To date, my 2 s/kids identify as Christian because their mother sends them to an anglican school, but the eldest (age 10) is questioning that. Miss 9 would like to be either Jewish, Hindu or a fairy at this stage- she's undecided
I have no issue with you deciding to bring up your children with a religion- I don't judge you for it, I don't sit around getting angry because you teach your kids there is a god when I don't believe this to be true- so take a leaf out of my book- it's of no concern to you if others want their kids to believe in Santa, you do with your kids what you want. If you want to change the whole Australian culture, I don't know that BH is the place to start

Yeah of course you are right mrsdj, I'm just so used to converting all the sabbats/cross quarter days over to the Southern Hemisphere so they suit our seasons for the true meaning of the celebrations...

I do this all the time! Being Pagan in the southern hemisphere I'm automatically switching everything around. But I guess it is confusing for some ppl lol.
