Default prenatal vitamins - anyone's dr told NOT to take them??

my fs said not to take prenatal vitamins (he said just take folate) but it seems in all the threads i read on here people are always talking about taking them and which brands are best, leading me to believe their drs recommend them. also, in every baby book and many mag articles i've read they always say start taking usually 6 mons before ttc???? i was really suprised at this!

we were talking about blood tests and such earlier in the appt and i brought up hearing about tests for killer antibodies or something i read that make your body acidic... and then later when i brough up vitamins he said they could make your body acidic. anyone else's dr tell them this???

i don't have the best nutrition, so i was thinking prenatals would be really beneficial. plus in all the books i've read, they say they help support the baby and avoid birth defects. i know folate is the major one, but i'd want to prepare my body the best way i can (well, if i can even get pregnant -- have some issues)

My doc said was fine to just take folate, but could take it in a pre-natal vitamin if I wanted to.... I started taking it 3 months beforehand on my docs advice. But that said lots of women don't start taking it til they find out they're pregnant and there's still lots of healthy bubbas out there!! No idea about the acidity tho!

yes the fs actually said i must take folate (alone and nothing else) but said NOT to take any multivitamins/prenatals or herbs or anything else. just only the folate.

i was just so suprised that the fs was so adamant about not taking a prenatal because it seems most everyone here is on elevit or blackmores cwgold or something similar and all the books recommend.. i have never read anywhere advising against prenatals.

just wondering if anyone at all has had their doctor say this? or if anyone is going to fertility specialist or dr soon that could ask i would be most grateful. thanks!

I have just been told the same thing by my FS as well when I saw him last week. I had issues taking the Blackmores Conceive Well Gold and Elevit (neither agreed with me very well) so he suggested taking the folate on its own and said that that is more than enough, you don't really need anything else.

My fs told me to stop taking vitamins and take the folate on it's own. I've read a few things about excess vitamin levels doing harm to feotus' - especially vitamin A - but don't really know why she told me to stop. Maybe there are so many foods (breads, juices, cereals etc) with additives that nothing else is really needed? Will ask tomorrow, (ET!!!!)

thank you! ok seems natural they would advise you to stop taking when causing issues with them.. but i haven't even started. just said when i asked about prenatal vitamins not to take them at all, strickly only folate.

so was wondering if anyone was also told that right off the bat without even starting them?

mine said folate too. unless you have a specific deficiency, it's just expensive pee.
