So tell me about Tassie

DH and I have toyed with the idea of moving to Tass - obviously first step would be to go on holiday and see what we think.. but i would like to know what you all think of it.

the good, bad and ugly...

We currently live in rural vic (colder part down south/east), I love the quiteness and would never want to move back to Mel. We love nature, the beach (DH surfes every day so we need to be withn half hr drive of beach), we love the cool weather but not sure if we want it so cold it snows! Ideal temp would be 25 max in summer for us, but warm enough throughout the yr to grow good veggies.

We aren't hippies, not prob not that normal either. ie. simple life - towards self sufficiency but we like our gadgets, internet, friends, decent restuarants, socialising, within easy drive to good schools and shops and hospy.

So does this place exist? and is it in Tass? We found a place online that looked lovely, its closest town was Smithon I think? DH likes the west coast cos of the surf - but its probably really cold yeh? and quite isoalted?

Tassie is the best if you want beach alot of the costal towns are small and all have at least an IGA supermarket and are within a short distance of bigger towns. I live in ulverstone and there is lots of parks for kids there. I love Tassie and wouldnt live anywhere else

I also love Tassie. You should totally move here Button! Although Smithton is on the north-west coast, I have never been there but I think it's a very small population and quite isolated? I personally would only like to live close to a major city like Hobart or Launceston just for convenience as I'm not sure what sort of facilities there are in such isolated towns?

Tassie's food is great, we grow veggies all year. The scenery is beautiful, it only snows on the mountains and there are beaches everywhere.

Tassie is awesome! Can't think of any bad or ugly that you wouldn't find elsewhere...Although, like Majestic Hiss, I wouldn't recommend living on the NW Coast. Maybe Bruny Island would suit as you'd have good access to surfing beaches. The rainfall in southern Tas is much less than southern Vic, so you might find that you even prefer the weather

tasmania is the best place for bushwalks. lots and lots within a couple of hours drive of pretty well anywhere. i have relatives in devonport and they're a short drive or even walk from the beach (not sure if it's a surf beach though?)
down side to tassie for me is the weather- i don't do cold. and short days in winter and long days in summer. it's a lovely place, i just wouldn't live there myself because of the weather.

I lived in tassie, lasted 18 months and when I came back to syd I wanted to kiss the ground. It's just not my kinda place. I'm a city girl tho and a wog so that's probably why... Lol
I met people there that loved it and people who couldn't wait to leave.
For me it's just boring and bogan. Not in a cute way either.
It's good if you like nature (I don't) it's cold I don't care what anyone says its COLD. The real estate is cheap tho. Food is more expensive same with elect etc.
It's beautiful I will admit that. Very wild untouched by humans ( the majority of it) great for holidays.
Work is another issue. Depends on what you do. My ex couldn't find a job a decent job even tho he is qualified and has experience. Took him 2 weeks to get 3 job offers in syd. They kept asking him of he is Muslim? Not sure what that was about.
Public education is a joke. My daughter was 2 years behind everyone in syd but top of her class there.
That's just my opinion. Hope I didn't offend anyone each to their own I'm just speaking form my persons experience.

I'm in the Huon Valley, a gorgeous spot surrounded by orchards, lush green, tree filled hills with lots of mountain views.

There's a big community in the Huon Valley of those into a more self sufficient lifestyle, including us and our community of friends. Where we are, we are 35mins to the CBD, the same to great bush walking and the same to beaches as well.

If you're after more suburban than semi-rural, then most of the Nothern Suburbs would suit nicely, close to all major services, beaches, still only short drives to national parks for bushwalking etc.

Tassie weather isn't as bad as some make it out to be. I've been here my whole life and while a LOATHE the cold, I do manage to survive just fine, good heating, insulation and a good design of house make all the difference.

They have the BEST meat pies. The BEST! I can't describe how good they are, I can't remember the name. Tassies help me out here, place starts with a B.. But zomg, I'd go there again for a pie. I've been to Burnie, Launceston, Ulverstone and Hobart, all were Beautiful.

We went there for out honeymoon and fell in love! Was April and cold at night but the days were gorgeous and it is just such a beautiful place!!

We are actually thinking of moving to Tassie too. Im mostly curious about the cost of living etc. Im so OVER the climate of WA and want to have a decent garden year round. I love the idea of being self sufficient but the weather probably would make solar electicity the wrong choice right??
