What type of dog is it? Our dog is a huge part of our family, so if we were to move or circumstances changed we would do what it took to keep her with us, but not everyone feels that way about their pets. If you think re-homing the dog is the best way to go please make sure you are very careful about who you pick, dont give him to the first jo blow that's interested. If the dog has any undesirable behaviour (digging, barking etc) make sure you are honest about that with potential new owners. Ask lots of questions about how they would treat the dog - would it be walked, would it be inside etc. If they have any other pets ask to see them/ have them meet your dog to see how they get along and the condition of other pets will give you an idea of how they look after them.

There are lots of people out there that would give him a good home and there are lots of people out there that will take a 'free-to-good-home' dog and treat them like sh!t - particularly a risk with large dogs that could be guard type dogs.

Personally I could never ever give my dog away to a stranger. He is so much part of the family, just wouldn't be the same without him :-( wouldn't be the same without him...

What type of dog is it?
Have you tried asking the agents if they could make an exception to the no pets rule?
Could you afford a dog walker to take the dog out a few times a week perhaps?

if you cant find a place where pets are allowed (sometimes you can have OUTSIDE pets .. just not inside) - then consider freecycle .. people sadly (often not by choice) give their pets away via that site.

Can you find an animal foster carer in your area? I would try that first before an ad in the paper or on the internet only becaus e they will take him until another forver home is found and they are picky about who takes their pets from them.

I'd never be able to leave my baby with anyone. I made a commitment to keep him and that means for life. We'll have a cat by the end of the year too. Another baby I've mad e a commitment to for the next 12 to 18 years .

But if that fails then a foster carer would be my preference.

Just wanted to add, if you have to go without your dog, you could consider finding a true no-kill shelter. Not sure where in Vic you are, but there used to be a very good one in Coldstream. They do all the appropriate checks on potential owners and work very very hard to match a dog with a suitable owner. Often when someone gives away their pet they don't find a suitable new owner, they just give them to a stranger who wants a dog, and often the dog will be put in a cycle of being re-homed again and again or abused because people don't take the time or don't know how to find the right person for the dog.

Last year we were considering giving away one of our dogs because she was escaping all the time (jumping the fence). We replaced that fence only to discover she could jump the new one as well Luckily for us we ended up sorting it out and were able to keep her, but I do understand sometimes the circumstances change and aren't as ideal as they once were.

If you do decide to rehome your dog you can still be a bit picky about who takes her. My Aunty has rehomed dozens of dogs (she is one of those people who takes in a lot of strays) and she is VERY picky about who takes them... asks them lots of questions to begin with to make sure they have a suitable yard, etc. I think she has even gone to the effort of taking the dog around for a "visit" to see if they get along and to check them out properly before anything final is agreed on. Probably wouldn't want to go to that extent, but it definitely doesn't have to be the first people who enquire.

    Good luck deciding
Did you know that if you put your ear up to a stranger's leg you can hear them say:
What the f*** are you doing?

So we got a family dog 18 months ago, we own our home in the country and intended to stay in this home for a long time certainly for the life of the dog!

Now through various circumstances we are selling up and moving to the city in which we will be renting for the first year at least, possibly longer!

What do we do with out dog?? Alot of the places we have looked at renting say 'no pets' the few houses that say 'pets negotiable' are dumps!

If I were to be honest we don't put the time into the dog we should, we don't have time to walk him but the kids love him and play with him everyday and he comes inside when we are home.

We have a huge yard here on a massive block, the houses in the city are litteraly half the size of our block with much much smaller yards.

Do we keep the dog when we move to the city or do we try give him away?

I half think with giving him away he might get a family who would walk him everyday and a nice yard to play in and my DHs family dog growing up was a give away but then we committed to getting him as a family dog I think he is part of our family wherever we are and he might get a crappy family just want a free dog cos it's free iykwim?
I have always looked at my pets as my children

so to me it would be like giving my child away
